Yes. At one’s “Bar Mitzvah”, a kind of right of passage when one becomes 13, an assigned text from the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament) is given to be read. According to the date of my Bar Mitzvah, I should have been assigned Isaiah 53, but I wasn’t. This passage was skipped and I was assigned Isaiah 54 instead. I wonder why?
Such is the power of the passage. For the Jew willing to consider the possibility that his Messiah has already come, Isaiah 53 makes everything make sense. For the Jew determined to reject the possibility no matter what, Isaiah 53 makes everything a confusing mess.
